How to Find People by Photo: 9 Search Methods
Have you wondered if a photo of a person you met online is actually them? Or have you tried to gather details about someone using nothing but their image? Understanding where we stand in the digital world today, it is possible to find people by their photos using online tools. Such tools help verify personalities and track the people that you are looking for. This technique also allows for the identification of the origin or source of the images. However, it is essential to use the right tools and methods to get accurate results.
In this article, I have included the most effective methods that I came across by testing them firsthand. We’ll delve into the power of reverse image lookup tools and reliable alternative approaches, including manual techniques. Gathering this knowledge, you will be better equipped to find people by photo. However, you must not use it with any malicious intent and respect the privacy of an individual who does not want to be found.
Methods for Finding People by Photo
Here are some of the methods that I shortlisted while looking for ways to find people by photo. I spent over 90 hours testing them firsthand and reviewing 30+ tools before selecting the best few.
Method 1: Using Social Catfish Reverse Image Search
Social Catfish is one of the most powerful people search engines that offers an intelligent image search. It can look up all public forums, social media, websites, blogs, court records, etc. I helped out a colleague to look for her long-lost cousin. The issue with the image was that it was 7 years old, and we weren’t sure if it would match any of their recent pictures due to the age factor. However, we did find him on Instagram with an entirely different username, and luckily, he had uploaded our input photo as a throwback in his post.
Using Social Catfish for my other searches, I came across several duplicates, hence, I’d suggest using filters for more precise information. I added certain identifiers when prompted, such as location, age group, etc. If you receive limited information, you can use its different search parameters using their information, if any.
Here is a step-by-step demonstration of how to use Social Catfish:
Step 1) First, go to https://socialcatfish.com/, choose the Image search option, upload the picture, and tap on Search.
Step 2) Once the scanning is complete, enter your email address and tick the Yes, I understand to agree to its terms and unlock the result.

Method 2: Using Spokeo People Search Engine
Spokeo is a people search engine that helps identify individuals and gathers information on their backgrounds. It is effective in collecting details about people you meet online or someone you are curious about. You can also use it to look up unknown phone numbers, full names, addresses, and emails.

Note that Spokeo isn’t a direct reverse image lookup tool, but it can bring up photos related to other search inputs. For example, I used its username lookup to gather details about a blogger my team wanted to collaborate with for an online course ad. It showed me their Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc., along with images. However, at times, you may also receive outdated information, such as old images and contact details. In such cases, try other Spokeo search parameters or verify using another reverse lookup tool.
Follow the steps given below to find photos and details about a person:
Step 1) First, visit https://www.spokeo.com/, enter the username in the search bar, and click on Search Now or hit Enter.
Step 2) Once the site has finished searching for the username, click on Unlock Full Results to view the details.
You may also use the details found in this report to perform other searches to gather more information.

Method 3: Using Google Images
Google Images is a great way to find people by photo. It is one of the most popular and accessible tools for reverse image searches. The system scans the web and returns images or links that resemble your uploaded picture. It is a helpful way to start identifying someone online, such as a potential date or a roommate while looking for new places to rent, etc.
I sometimes encountered difficulty with cluttered backgrounds, which affected the results. To solve this problem, I used its cropping tool to cut out distractions and increase clarity. I noticed that even a slight change in the image can enhance results significantly. This method is excellent for quick searches as it can be used on the go. Especially if you are using it on a smartphone, as its mobile version is integrated with Google Lens.
Here’s a step-by-step process of how I used Google Images to find people by photo:
Step 1) Visit https://images.google.com/, upload the photo, drag and drop a file, enter a URL or paste the image.
Step 2) Once the photo is scanned, you will get numerous results, for better accuracy, you can also select the Exact Matches option.
Step 3) You can then click on the links and find more details about the individual, such as their social media, news blogs, etc.

Method 4: Using Bing Visual Search
Bing Visual Search is a reverse look-up tool by Microsoft Bing. It includes a built-in cropping tool, and therefore, if you need to find a person from a group photo, you can look them up by cropping them out. I used it to look up a gentleman I met on a dating app a few years back to be on the safer side. Bing Visual Search led me to his social networks and even a small blog about a reality show he participated in.
However, the site might also provide numerous unrelated results along with accurate output. So I decided to refine my search with filters such as “similar images”. To view the links alone, you can tap on the “Pages” option for better clarity. There were also times when it couldn’t find any images, so I suggest using Google Images in such cases. Additionally, if you receive generic results, try using a more unique and clear image.
Here’s how I used Bing Visual Search to look for a person using their photo:
Step 1) Go to https://www.bing.com/visualsearch, insert a URL, upload an image, drag and drop a file or browse it, and allow the tool to search.
Step 2) Now look at the results and get more details about them, such as their name. If you want more details, click on the Pages option to get the links. (Ignore the unrelated generic images)

Method 5: Using FaceCheck ID
FaceCheck ID is a direct facial lookup site that can provide images from all online sources, including videos. It can go through billions of images within a few seconds and provide pictures of the individual. I not only found the same photo I uploaded but also other images of the same person. It’s amazing how FaceCheck ID can even identify side-facing pictures and allow bulk uploads. The tool helped me identify an image of an ex-classmate and led to their socials, who I had lost touch with after 12th grade.
However, it returns “not valid” for certain images. In such cases, I convert the image file to a supported format, for example, JPG or PNG. It also worked when I reduced the file size of the invalid image. If you come across any other error messages while uploading a picture, I suggest clearing the cookies or using a different browser.
Here’s how I use FaceCheck ID to find people by photo:
Step 1) Go to https://facecheck.id/, upload a photo/photos, and tap on Search Internet by Face. Then, tick the terms and conditions, clear CAPTCHA, and allow the tool to search.
Step 2) Once the search is complete, you will find the results, which will show multiple images of the person you are looking for. Clicking on the Instagram and other links will lead you directly to the source.

Method 6: Using TinEye Reverse Image Search
TinEye is a reverse image search engine that includes products like MatchEngine, TinEye API, etc. I was able to find several similar images with site links, including manipulated photos. Therefore, even if you upload a cropped picture with different color grading, it will bring up related results. Its daily notifications were also quite helpful, as this allowed me to find outputs for photos that didn’t have any results at the beginning.
One of its main drawbacks is that it does not scan social media. Hence, you will find images only from websites. I combined my search process with Google Images and other reverse image searches when it was impossible to get any results. However, it is great for manipulated images. If you want to use its API, you will need some technical help if you are a beginner in API setup. It is also an excellent tool for people who suspect identity theft and their images being misused.
Here’s a demonstration of how I use TinEye:
Step 1) Visit the site https://tineye.com/, enter the image URL, drag and drop or paste or upload an image, then tap on the 🔎icon.
Step 2) It will take a few seconds to scan, and once the result is ready, you will find the same/ similar images. I found 11 photos that match my search, along with site links and dates.

Method 7: Using Pinterest
Pinterest is a social media website/ app that allows people to post images, like, comment, share, create mood boards, take inspo for different aesthetics, etc. Its built-in reverse lookup and cropping tool are very helpful in finding similar images within the app. I used it several times to find the real Pinterest accounts of creators whose images were posted on different accounts by fans.
The private accounts, however, cannot be searched using even the built-in search tool. If you want to find something on the app, the image should be uploaded to your account and kept public for it to work. I also suggest deleting the image from the app right after you complete the search.
Here’s how I used Pinterest to find someone by photo:
Step 1) Go to the Pinterest app, upload the image of the individual on your account, and use the lens on the right-hand side to look them up. (make sure your account is public)
Step 2) Once you use the lens it will provide you with the results. Look for a name in these results to find out who they are.

Method 8: Asking Your Friends
This method is one of the most instant ways to find out someone using a photo. It may not always have a result, but it is straightforward and doesn’t require any tools. However, not every friend may cooperate in your search, or some might not be trustworthy enough to keep it a secret. This can lead to interpersonal issues. Hence, make sure you judge your mutual connections and friends carefully and do not ask for sensitive information. Convey your intent clearly to make sure that you are not tagged as a creep.
Method 9: Hiring a Private Investigator or Local Authorities
If all else fails and it is an emergency situation, contacting a private investigator or local authorities is your answer. Use this method only when you are 100% sure that it’s a serious case. These teams and individuals can help locate the person using special techniques, which can be quite effective. Note that using a private investigator with any malicious intent is a violation of the law. You must also not waste the time of authorities unless it is absolutely necessary. These services can be expensive, therefore, make sure you have resources to fund them.
Honourable Mentions
Here are some honorable mentions that didn’t make the list but can be helpful in your research.
1) Yandex Images
Yandex Images is similar to Google Images; the main difference is that it’s a Russian search engine. It can look up images in a few seconds and offer similar results. I like that it has a separate section for site links, which is given directly below the image results, which makes the search convenient. However, you will have to translate the site as it appears in Russian.
2) PimEyes
PimEyes is a facial recognition tool that lets you upload an image or take a picture using its camera icon. It can find similar photos and even help you look up yourself or your work to locate copyright infringement. I also set an alert to be notified when any new result appears. Moreover, users can permanently erase their images from external websites using this site.
3) SauceNao
SauceNao is an image locator and reverse photo search site. It lets you paste a URL or upload an image to perform a search. I found it quite helpful in locating images used by catfishers from movies, for example, a scene of a lesser-known actor or a character role’s picture for their DP. You can select a specific database to narrow down your search. It offers DBs such as H-Magazines, H-Game CC, Movies, Shows, H-Anime, Konachan, Danbooru, etc.
Issues in Finding Someone by Photo and Their Solutions
Here are some of the most common challenges of finding someone by Photo, and I have also provided the best solution side by side:
Challenge | Solution |
---|---|
Poor image quality or blurry and old photos only for input | Use online image enhancer tools or crop the image and increase the sharpness |
No results in the output | Try multiple tools, do not rely on the single site that you are fond of |
Limited results from social media | Instead of just using tools, try manual search as well on social media using bits of information received in reverse search |
The image you have is filtered or edited | Find the original using reverse image lookup such as Google Images and FaceCheck ID |
The site doesn’t scan all platforms | Use multiple tools along with your specific reverse lookup tool |
Misidentification and false positives | Try a different image, for instance– a front-facing clearer image without distraction, or use other tools |
Privacy and ethical boundaries | Use the sites responsibly, avoid any kind of harmful intent, respect people’s privacy, and, if the tool allows, delete the images from the site after performing a search |
Tips to Find Someone Quickly Using Photo
Here are essential tips and steps on how to combine tools, strategy, and research to find the desired results if you fail to get an output with one method:
Step 1) First, use Google Reverse Image Search and find visually similar photos across the web and social media sites.
Step 2) Next, use other reverse image tools, such as Bing Visual Search, Yandex, FaceCheck ID, etc., to find the same photo.
Step 3) Next, crop the image if the results are too vast and vague, make sure the focus is on their face. Use image enhancers if needed.
Step 4) If it’s still not satisfying, use tools to extract the image’s metadata. Additionally, look into the photo’s background to gather clues such as location and landmarks.
Step 5) Now, try public people directories such as Social Catfish, Spokeo, etc., to gather details like full name or username. This may even lead you to their social media easily.
Step 6) Try using social media platforms to find them manually. Once you have their username, a social media search will be beneficial. Use the other information, such as hobbies, in the reverse lookup report to join community forums to find them.
Step 7) Lastly, cross-verify your findings using all the results you have received to avoid assumptions. Make sure your actions remain ethical and respectful and stay within legal boundaries.

Conclusion
To wrap it up, I’d say that finding people by photo is not challenging as the tools are pretty easy to use. However, the results might vary from site to site. The chances of coming across unrelated results are also common. Although, using the tool’s search filters and better image input can address these issues. As per my experience, I’d say Social Catfish, Google Images, Bing Visual Search, and FaceCheck ID are some of the most reliable sites for this purpose. However, you must ensure that you have no negative ulterior motive behind searching someone by photo and never forget that respecting an individual’s privacy should be a priority.
