How to Play Music in Discord: 3 Streaming Methods

Discord is a well-known online platform that connects people as they engage in various activities. Originally, discord was designed to provide gamers with a platform to communicate directly. However, there is much more to the world of Discord than just a voice chat for gamers.
Anyone can use Discord, and its major aim is to get people to create a space or community where they can belong. This includes friends, fan groups, schoolwork, family, and other hobbies. While hanging out in Discord, you can also play music using bots and Spotify, although it could be something not everyone is aware of. Hence, I will share the simplest methods on how to play music in Discord.
How to set up Discord
Discord is available on Windows PC, Macs, and smartphones. You can either download the Discord App through the device’s app store or go to the Discord Website, which will redirect you to the download page. Once installed, open the application and log in with your registered account information. However, if you have no Discord account, you need to create an account right from within the app.
How to Play Music in Discord
There are three ways of adding and listening to music on Discord:
- By adding a music bot to your Discord server.
- Playing music on Discord through Spotify.
- Playing Music on Discord through a connected microphone.
Method 1: Adding a music bot to your server (using a pc)
In the course of my review, I found that a bot is software that runs automated tasks on any enabled platform. Music bots, particularly, can play songs on an online platform like Discord. To play songs on Discord via a music bot, you will need to create a server within your Discord account and invite the music bot to the server. There are many Discord bots available, but in this guide, I will use Fredboat. To add a music bot to your server, follow these steps:
Step 1) Search for the Discord app on your computer and open it. You can find the list of servers at the top left of the Discord app’s home page.
Note: If you have an empty list of servers, you will need to create a Discord server.
Click on the ‘+’ button on the top left side of the Discord screen.
Step 2) A pop-up window titled Create a Server will appear on the Create My option.
Step 3) Select the type of server you want to proceed with, from the- Tell us more about your server pane. Here I have selected For me and my friends.
Step 4) After customizing your server, edit your SERVER NAME. In my case, my server is called Seged’s server. Now, click on the Create tab.
Step 5) The created server can be found in the list of servers on the top left side of the Discord screen.
Step 6) Now, visit the official site of the Fredboat.
Step 7) You will see the Invite To Server option. Click on it, and you will be redirected to a Discord Login page.
Step 8) Login with your account details.
Step 9) Click on login and verify that I am human.
Step 10) Specify the server on the ADD TO SERVER, in this case, Seged’s server, and click Continue.
Step 11) Give permissions to everything you want the bot to do on your Discord server, and click Authorize.
Step 12) Now switch to the Discord App and Verify that the bot has been added successfully by clicking on the Member List.
Step 13) To play music, join a voice channel and type /play <link or query song name> on the voice channel’s message bar. It will give you a list of songs where you can select them by typing /playing <number>, then pressing Enter or tapping on one of the number options.
Method 2: How to Play Music on Discord bot through Spotify
Step 1) Now Open your Discord Application and click on User Settings.
Step 2) Click on Connections and Locate the Spotify Icon on the right hand of the screen.
Step 3) Click on the Spotify icon. Log into your account and tick the AGREE button at the bottom of the page.
Step 4) A notification will appear saying, Connect your Spotify Account to Discord.
Step 5) You can start listening to songs on Spotify through Discord.
How to play music in Discord through a Mic
I tried playing music in Discord with a mic, and here are the steps that I used to make it happen. Note that a reliable setup is essential to ensure smooth playback.
Step 1) Search for Control Panel on your PC and click on Open.
Step 2) Go to Hardware and Sound. Then, navigate to Sound, where you click on Manage audio devices.
Step 3) In Sound, a pop-up window will appear. Here, you must access the Recording tab.
Step 4) Now, enable Stereo Mix and set the default device.
Step 5) You can then join a voice channel and start playing music in Discord using the mic.
Method 3: How to play music on Discord on Mobile (using a music bot)
As per my research, playing music using a music bot is similar in Android and iPhone. The steps that I used are straightforward and efficient.
Step 1) Open the Discord App.
Step 2) My server list shows empty, so to create a server, I tapped on the ‘+’ symbol at the top left of the screen.
Step 3) In the Create Your Server pane, tap on Create My Own.
Step 4) Then, Tell us more about your server pane will appear. Tap on For me and my friends button.
Step 5) Next, the Create Your Server window will appear. Specify your Server Name, in this case, the name will be Seged’s server. You may also add a profile picture, finally, tap Create Server.
Step 6) Your created server will be on the top left side of the screen.
Step 7) Now go to your browser and visit the Fredboat Website. Then, tap on the Invite To Server.
Step 8) Log in to your Discord account.
Step 9) Select the Server name Seged’s server to get the Fredboat Bot on it and tap Continue.
Step 10) Give the required permissions to the site and click the Authorize button.
Step 11) After marking the Captcha box for verification, the permissions are granted to use the bot.
Step 12) Now, switch to the Discord App. Check the Member’s List to verify the bot has been added successfully.
Step 13) To play music, join a Voice channel and type /play <link or query song name> on the text channel’s message bar.
You can now choose a music/song by typing /playing <number>, then pressing Enter or tapping on one of the number options.
What are the Common discord bots to use?
With Groovy shut down due to a violation of YouTube’s terms of service, some alternate good Discord bots, including Hydra, Mee6, Probot, and Fredboat.
Can one play music on Discord without a bot?
The only way so far to play music on Discord without a bot is through Spotify. This will require you to connect your Discord account to Spotify, as outlined above.
