**⚡ Smart Summary**

Configuring Informatica PowerCenter after installation means creating the Repository Service, generating repository contents, creating the Integration Service, adding the domain to each client tool, and creating users with domain and repository privileges.

- 🏢 **Domain first:** The Informatica domain is the administrative unit that owns every node, service and user account.
- 🗄️ **Repository Service:** Create it first, backed by a database user that holds connect and resource privileges.
- 📦 **Repository contents:** Contents are the metadata tables, and the service cannot start until they are created once.
- 🔄 **Operating mode:** Switch the Repository Service from exclusive back to normal so developers can connect.
- ⚙️ **Integration Service:** This service locks, fetches and executes workflows, and writes the workflow and session logs.
- 🔐 **Clients and users:** Each client adds the domain by gateway host and port, and every user needs explicit privileges.

After installing the Informatica server and client, the Informatica server needs to be configured.

The Informatica architecture is a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Therefore, before using Informatica tools, the server and client components need to be installed and configured.

Prerequisites to configure clients, the Integration Service and the Repository Service:

- Informatica server and client should be [installed](https://www.guru99.com/install-informatica-powercenter.html).
- Informatica service should be up and running.
- Oracle or another compatible database must be installed, and the database service must be up.
- Database users must be created for the Repository Service.
- Domain administrator console credentials must be available (these are configured during server installation).

The following components need to be set up before you can start working in Informatica PowerCenter.

1. Informatica domain
2. Creating the Repository Service
3. Creating the Integration Service
4. Creating users

## What is an Informatica Domain?

An Informatica Domain is the basic administrative unit for various services and hosts.

Using the domain console you can perform various administrative tasks like adding a node, creating a Repository Service, creating an Integration Service, creating a Reporting Service, managing and creating users, monitoring services, and so on.

During installation of the Informatica server, the system prompts for setting up the domain credentials and database connection. That database is the [domain configuration repository](https://www.guru99.com/informatica-architecture-tutorial.html), which is separate from the PowerCenter repository created below.

You need to use the same credentials when you access the domain console.

## How to Open the Administrator Home Page

**Step 1)** From the program menu, open the Informatica Administrator home page.

[![Informatica Administrator shortcut in the Windows program menu]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig1.png)

This will open up the domain home page in the web browser.

**Troubleshooting** – if the home page does not open up, check whether the Informatica server process and the database service are up and running. If not, start them.

**Step 2)** Enter the domain credentials (these credentials are generated during server installation).

[![Informatica Administrator login page asking for domain user name and password]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig2.png)

**Step 3)** On successful login, the Informatica Administrator home page appears, as shown below.

[![Informatica Administrator home page with the Domain Navigator on the left]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig3.png)

## How to Create the Repository Service

It is the first service that needs to be created in the domain console. The prerequisite is to have a database user created in the database along with basic privileges (connect, resource), as this service maintains repository data in the database. You can create versioned objects in the repository using the enable version control option.

You can select Oracle, DB2, Sybase or [SQL Server](https://www.guru99.com/sql.html) databases to create a repository.

**Step 1)** Start the service creation wizard.

1. Right-click on the domain name
2. Select the new option
3. Select PowerCenter Repository Service.

[![Right-click menu on the domain showing New PowerCenter Repository Service]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig4.png)

**Step 2)** In the next screen:

1. Enter a name for the repository
2. Select the license
3. Select the node
4. Click on the Next button

[![New PowerCenter Repository Service wizard page for name, license and node]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig5.png)

**Step 3)** In the next screen:

1. Enter the database properties.
2. Select the option – enable version control, if the version control feature is required for Informatica development.
3. Select the finish button.

[![Repository database properties page with database type, user name and connection string]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig6.png)

**Note** – the connection string name is the name of the database instance service name.

**Step 4)** The Repository Service will be created, and will be listed under the domain tree.

[![Newly created PowerCenter Repository Service listed in the domain tree]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig7.png)

**Troubleshooting** – if there is an error during service creation, check whether the correct database credentials are provided, and whether the connection string is correct. After any changes are made to repository properties, recycle the Repository Service to make the changes effective.

## How to Create Repository Contents

After the Repository Service is created, repository contents need to be created (this is a one-time activity for a repository). Without repository contents, you cannot start the Repository Service. Repository content is basically the set of database tables that contains the details of objects created in Informatica.

**Step 1)** Select the Repository Service under the domain tree.

[![Repository Service selected in the Domain Navigator before creating contents]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig8.png)

**Step 2)** After selecting the Repository Service:

1. Select the Actions menu on the right side of the page
2. Select the repository contents option
3. Select the create option

[![Actions menu expanded to Repository Contents and Create]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig9.png)

**Step 3)** In the next screen:

1. Select the options of local/global repository (we are keeping it unchecked to create a local repository)
2. Select version control (if required; we are keeping it unchecked to skip the version control feature)
3. Click OK.

[![Create repository contents dialog with global repository and version control check boxes]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig10.png)

**Step 4)** Once repository content is created, change the Repository Service from exclusive to normal mode.

**Note** – if the Repository Service is in exclusive mode, users would not be able to connect to the repository. Exclusive mode allows a single user at a time, which is what makes creating or deleting contents safe; normal mode is the multi-user state developers connect to.

Select the edit property option of the repository.

[![Edit button on the Repository Service properties panel]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig11.png)

**Step 5)** In the properties dialog:

1. Select the mode from exclusive to normal
2. Select the OK button.

[![Repository Service properties dialog with the operating mode set to Normal]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig12.png)

Once done, the Repository Service will be running in normal mode.

## How to Create the Integration Service

The Integration Service is responsible for the execution of [workflows](https://www.guru99.com/workflows-informatica.html). Whenever any workflow is executed from Workflow Manager, a scheduler or the command prompt, the Integration Service receives a request. This service locks the respective workflow, fetches the details about the workflow, mapping and session from the Informatica repository, and executes the workflow. This service is also responsible for creating workflow logs, reading parameter files, creating process threads to execute workflows, executing any other task created in Workflow Manager, and so on.

The two services divide the work as follows.

| Service | What it is responsible for |
| --- | --- |
| Repository Service | Stores and serves the metadata – mappings, sessions, workflows and folders – held in the repository database. |
| Integration Service | Reads that metadata and actually runs the workflows and sessions, writing session and workflow logs. |

To create the Integration Service:

**Step 1)** Start the service creation wizard.

1. Right-click on the Domain Navigator tree
2. Select the new option
3. Select PowerCenter Integration Service

[![Domain Navigator right-click menu showing New PowerCenter Integration Service]()](https://www.guru99.com/images/informatica/083115_0522_HowtoConfig13.png)

Now you will be able to connect to the repository using the client tools.

This completes the exercise of Repository Service creation, Integration Service creation, domain configuration, user creation and adding a repository in the client.

## FAQs

🗃️ What is the difference between the domain configuration database and the repository database?

The domain configuration database stores node, service and user metadata for the whole domain and is created during server installation. The repository database is separate and holds PowerCenter objects such as mappings, sessions and workflows.

🚦 Why must repository contents be created before the service can start?

Repository contents are the metadata tables themselves. Until they exist, the Repository Service has no schema to read or write, so it cannot move into a usable running state for developers.

🔗 What value belongs in the connection string field?

The connection string is the database instance service name that the Repository Service uses to reach its schema. For Oracle this is the service name; an incorrect value is the most common cause of service creation failure.

🌐 Which port does the Informatica Administrator tool use?

The Administrator tool listens on port 6008 by default. The gateway host and gateway port you enter on each client must match the values chosen during server installation, not the browser console address.

🧩 Can one domain contain more than one Repository Service?

Yes. A domain can host several PowerCenter Repository Services and Integration Services across its nodes. Each Integration Service is associated with one Repository Service, which is chosen on the last page of the creation wizard.

🛡️ What is the difference between a privilege and a role?

A privilege grants a single action, such as running a workflow. A role bundles privileges together so the same set can be granted repeatedly. The Privileges tab assigns both per domain and per service.

🤖 How is AI used in Informatica administration today?

Informatica ships CLAIRE, its AI engine, which profiles data, recommends transformations and flags anomalies in job behaviour. Administrators also apply machine learning to service logs to predict failures before workflows break.

🧑‍💻 Can GitHub Copilot help automate repository and service setup?

Copilot can draft the infacmd and pmrep command lines, shell wrappers and parameter files that repeat this console procedure. Always review generated commands against Informatica documentation before running them against a live domain.
